Biography
Commissioner Rafael Marte has been a public servant for most of his life. As a social worker for nearly 30 years at the Westchester Department of Social Services and as a Councilman in Bergenfield for two terms, Commissioner Marte has always been a passionate advocate for all. He also holds a deep connection to his Dominican heritage, and in 2019 founded the Dominican Cultural Association of New Jersey to promote and preserve Dominican culture.
Rafael immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in 1974 at the age of eleven, and has been living in Bergenfield, New Jersey for over 28 years. He graduated from the Architectural program at Manhattan Vocational Technical High School and went on to attend the City College of New York to study architecture and economics.
He has been married to his wife Natalia Herrera-Marte for 30 years and is the father of four incredible children. His oldest son is married and has three children of his own. His second oldest son obtained a degree in Forensic Psychology in 2023 from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. His daughter is pursuing a career in Education at Ramapo College, and his youngest son attends Bergenfield High School.
Commissioner Marte looks forward to continuing his pursuit of serving his community as a County Commissioner, and brings decades of experience in public administration and social services.
