Traffic Engineer Department of Planning & Engineering

Organizational Overview:

The Bergen County Department of Planning & Engineer, Engineering Division strives for quality of life improvements through various transportation infrastructure projects that include bridges, culverts, drainage systems, roadways, and signalized intersections under County jurisdiction.  The Division administers these infrastructure improvement projects from concept through construction.  The Division continues to modernize infrastructure to improve safety and the movement of traffic along County roadways while remaining compliant with new regulations and design requirements.

Job Description:           

The Bergen County Department of Planning and Engineering is seeking a licensed professional civil engineer, with at least 5 years of traffic engineering experience. Must be responsible and self-motivated with strong communication and computer skills, including a proficiency in AutoCAD.

Shall be capable of designing traffic signals, signal timings, signing and striping plans, review consultant construction plans, prepare bid documents, and administer intersection improvement construction contracts. Perform reviews of traffic related improvements for site plan and subdivision applications, and address traffic related inquiries from municipal officials.

Job Responsibilities:              

  • Evaluate intersections using traffic analysis software, accident data and traffic counts.
  • Use AutoCAD to prepare traffic signal plans and signing and striping plans.
  • Prepare traffic signal timing charts.
  • Monitor Adaptive Traffic Signal Systems.
  • Prepare bid documents for intersection improvement projects, including plans and technical specifications, etc.
  • Review construction plans for conformance with Bergen County standards
  • Administer engineering design, inspection, and construction contracts.
  • Perform traffic engineering reviews for site plan and subdivision applications submitted for County Planning Board approval.
  • Analyze traffic signal operation and phasing.

Schedule:    Full time (40 hours/week)

Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of Civil Engineering.

Other Requirements:

  • Professional Engineer's License.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • 5+ years of experience in Traffic Engineering.
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and technical writing skills.
  • AutoCAD and Microsoft Office experience.
  • Traffic analysis software experience including HCS, Synchro.
  • Adaptive Signal software experience a plus.
  • Experience in review of construction plans including grading, cross-sections, profiles, drainage, etc.
  • Experience in preparing technical specifications and bid documents.
