The Bergen County Parks System encompasses over 9,500 acres of passive, programmed, and specialized recreational facilities in New Jersey’s most populated county with immediate proximity to NYC. Located over 246 square miles and 70 municipalities, the county parks system is comprised of both revenue generating and non-revenue generating facilities and is managed through 5 divisions, 3 geographic regions and standalone specialized facilities which function 24/7/365.

Job Description:           

This employment opportunity is to serve as the Superintendent of Public Property. Under direction, makes surveys and cost estimates, and supervises preventive maintenance, alterations, and repairs for municipal and/or county owned buildings and properties; the trimming, planting, and caring for and preserving of public parks, greens, grounds, and trees in public areas; the maintenance/repair of play fields and playground areas, facilities, and equipment; the care, use, and assignment of motor vehicles for use by the municipality and/or county other than fire engines; and prepares reports and correspondence; does other related duties as required.

Job Responsibilities:              

  • Makes continuous surveys of all buildings/facilities for the purpose of establishing a preventive maintenance and repair program.
  • Sets up programs for individual properties/facilities based on results of surveys on a priority basis so that funds may be made available for adequate/economical maintenance.
  • Surveys maintenance units to determine their adequacy, efficiency, and ability of personnel to perform maintenance/repair work stemming from physical characteristics of the several properties.
  • Enforces the maintenance/repair work program and supervises work of maintenance/repair personnel.
  • Supervises construction projects in the field and acts as representative of the department at construction job meetings and other meetings.
  • Receives and reviews reports on the maintenance/repair program and on the construction program for the department.
  • Prepares, analyzes, and approves items relating to the maintenance/repair and construction programs in the preparation of budget requests for public property and facilities.
  • Prepares statistical and other summaries and reports on maintenance/repair and construction activities containing findings, conclusions, analyses, and recommendations.
  • Attends meetings and conferences.
  • Supervises the maintenance and development of roads, trails, lakes, lake site and stream improvements, buildings, ground structures, and recreation equipment/facilities in parks and recreation areas.
  • Supervises the establishment and maintenance of records, plans, blueprints, and other files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Schedule:   

  • Full time (40 hours/week)
  • On call is required

Education Requirements: High School Diploma

Other Requirements:

  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience in the construction of buildings and structures.
  • Valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
