Senior Animal Attendant - County of Bergen Department of Health Services – Division of Animal Services
Under direction, takes the lead over one or more employees involved in the care, feeding, and grooming of dogs, cats, or other animals; does other related duties as required.
Job Responsibilities: (may include but not limited to)
- Knowledge of the care and feeding of animals and methods of cleaning and disinfecting cages, pens, and related equipment.
- Knowledge and ability to identify symptoms of health disorders in animals.
- Ability to maintain records.
- Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with coworkers and the public.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Takes the lead over staff engaged in the care, feeding, cleaning, and grooming of animals, and the cleaning of their living quarters and adjacent areas.
- Distributes and balances workload among staff in accord with established workflow or job specialization and ensures timely accomplishment of assigned workload and that each employee has enough work to be kept busy.
- Observes status of work progress, makes necessary adjustments in accord with established priorities, notifies supervisor as to work progress and status of assignments, requests advice or needed information regarding problems that arise, and pass on to staff instructions received from the supervisor.
- Answers questions of staff regarding procedures, policies, regulations, and instructions, and instructs them in specific tasks and job techniques.
- Answers questions of the supervisor regarding overall work operations and problems.
- Gives on-the-job training to new staff in accord with established procedures and practices and informs them of available services and agency regulations.
- Resolves simple informal complaints of employees and refers other complaints to the supervisor.
- Informs supervisor as to progress and training needs of employees, and makes suggestions as to disciplinary matters, promotions, reassignments, dismissals, and other personnel actions.
- Feeds, waters, cleans, grooms, and exercises animals.
- Cleans and sterilizes animal food bowls and water pans, cleans, disinfects, and deodorizes washing and grooming areas.
- Cleans and disinfects animal living quarters and may clean other areas including the office and outside areas.
- Collects stool samples and takes them to veterinarian for analysis for parasites.
- Observes animals’ general health, diet, weight, and appetite for negative symptoms.
- Maintains security within the area where animals are housed.
- May assist with training animals.
- May perform routine clerical work in keeping records of animals being housed.
Education Requirements:
- High School Diploma.

Other:
- One (1) year of experience in the care and feeding of animals is required.
- One (1) year of experience as the leader of staff in an organizational unit is preferred but not required.
- Possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, excellent computer skills.
